Lionel Messi: Is his career over?

Lionel Messi has had one fantastic career so far, showing how loyal he is by only playing for one club. He recently handed in a transfer request that will see him leave the Camp Nou. Manchester City are hoping to secure the Argentine national signature by the end of this summer transfer window.

Messi requested to leave the club this transfer window after Barcelona suffered an 8-2 defeat to the current champions league holders Bayern Munich.

Questions have been flying around the media for the last couple of weeks. Will Lionel Messi leave Barcelona? And if so, where will he go? The most likely club that will gain the signature of Lionel Messi will be Manchester City, joining up with ex Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola.

Messi believes that a clause within his contract enabling him to leave on a free transfer has been activated allowing him to move to any club he sees fit to join. Both Barcelona and La Liga say that any move from the club will cost €700 million (£630m / $825m) due to a release clause and will have to be paid in full and still remains valid. It will be the only way for Messi to terminate his deal with the club.

Barcelona presidential election candidate, Victor Font spoke to Sky Sports about how the club can now prevent Lionel Messi from leaving he said “That's the hope, right? Until it's over there is always hope. And therefore I really hope the decision can be changed. It doesn't seem likely, though, and therefore if that's the case, the focus should be on making the transition as smooth as possible. And the ties between Messi and Barcelona that go very deep, remain there, so we can ensure somehow, the relationship continues in the future.".

Is his career over?

Lionel Messi has only played for one club his whole career and to solidify himself as the best in the world he has to show that he can perform in any top class league in the world because his long term revival Cristiano Ronaldo has a proven track record at various top clubs. As he begins to leave Barcelona whether that be in this season's transfer window or when his contract comes to an end in June 2021, he will begin a new career within a new club.
