Gareth Southgate: has he got it right?

Gareth Southgate at the end of August picked his English national squad that would face off against Finland and Denmark but he has chosen a player unproven in top flight football. Kalvin Phillips has been added to the squad but has only recently been promoted to the Premier League with Championship Winners Leeds United but was chosen over Jack Grealish. Jack Grealish was later called up by Southgate after players dropped out from the squad.

Kalvin Phillips have had a fantastic season with Leeds United, proving to be the main man in their championship winning squad being called the Yorkshire Pirlo. He was one of the best players in the Championship and without doubt the best holding midfielder in the league.

Did he deserve the call up?

Many Leeds fans will argue that he does deserve the call up but while looking at the stats of his previous season, it does show that he can perform under pressure but as many football fans will know the jump from the Championship to the Premier League can mean the best players in that league doesn’t mean that he will be able to keep up with the same skill level in the Premier League.

Phillips will join up with his English team mates, where they will be travelling to Iceland, the match is set to start at 5pm(BST). If Phillips is given the chance by Southgate and gets game time in Iceland, fans will be able to see for themselves if he can handle playing with the big boys and if he will be able to handle himself in the Premier League next season.

The question is to you. Do you think Gareth Southgate made the right decision? Do you think Kalvin Phillips will fit into the team?
