England: Will Pickford be No1 for long?

Jordan Pickford has been the number one choice for England since 2017, he played between the sticks when England managed to get to the quarter finals of the World Cup in 2018.

The question fans have been asking is whether Jordan Pickford has a future as England No1. His recent form at Everton has had its ups and downs but he hasn’t managed to keep a clean sheet, his team seems to be scoring more goals then their opponents and not relying on him keeping goals out.

Pickford was recently dropped from the Everton squad against Newcastle in the Premier League, he returned shortly after to face Manchester United where his squad suffered a 3-1 defeat.

Currently 2 possible replacements are in place to take Pickfords number one spot, who are, Burnley’s Nick Pope and Manchester United’s Dean Henderson.

Does Southgate back Pickford?

England are going to be playing the Republic of Ireland at Wembley stadium on Thursday 12th November, Nick Pope is set to start in goal to replace the regular England No1 Pickford.

Fans have scrutinised team selection and Southgate for the England managers loyalty to the current England no1. When asked Southgate said "When people say I have been loyal to him, he has deserved that, "His performances for us have been excellent so that has not been a difficult decision for me.

"We have some competition for places but I would have to say that there is nobody who I think is challenging seriously at the moment to push him out of that position.

"In terms of how his club are looking after him, he has got a hugely experienced manager there who has won everything in the game. He is in a very good place."

Pickford could be returning to the starting line up against Belgium on the 15th November but their game after against Iceland may have to be forfeited to fall in line with the UK governments COVID guidelines. Iceland are set to play Denmark before their game against England and because of the discovery of a new strain of Coronavirus linked to the country's mink farms, England may have to forfeit this match.
