England: Bad Boys, Bad Boys!!

Gareth Southgate has just released his 30 man squad that will face Wales and Belgium at Wembley Stadium. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Bukayo Saka, and Harvey Barnes have earned themselves a call up by Southgate while 2 young players have been left out of the squad, maybe, for their actions in Iceland.

Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden were punished for their actions whilst on international duty. England traveled to Iceland and after the game both young internationals welcomed others into their hotel rooms, breaching their secure bubble allowing them to play football. They were sent home after being excluded from the England squad as they had breached strict guidelines. Southgate spoke out about them breaking the rules "Unfortunately this morning, it was brought to my attention that the two boys have broken the Covid guidelines in terms of our secure bubble.”

Has Gareth Southgate left them out to teach them a lesson?

Southgate has expressed that he has left the two payers out of the squad in order to "send a message to all our players". Even though he has sent this message he still feels like Greenwood and Foden shouldn’t be punished further for their actions and hopes that their time away will allow them to reflect on their actions.

Southgate said: "They're two very talented players, we have to send a message to all our players, at every age level, that that sort of thing isn't how we do things at England.” ”But, we've also got to rehabilitate these two boys. Young people will make mistakes.” ”These boys have suffered enough. We think they needed this period of reflection, but then that gives them the opportunity to get back onto their feet with their clubs, enjoy their football again, and then I can speak to them after."

Whilst giving new players a chance to show off their skills, he has called up more experienced players including Ben Chilwell, Harry Winks, and Marcus Rashford. He has also given players like Kalvin Phillips their second call up and potentially their second international cap.
